How to Write an Attractive CV in Tanzania

Do you get challenge on writing an attractive CV? Today you will wonder how simple is to write an attractive CV and it is important to write an attractive CV. Writing a good CV is one thing and writing an attractive CV acceptable by Tanzanian employers is another thing.

I am going to walk you step by step on how to write an attractive CV in Tanzania. To write a CV is more than listing your education and jobs it’s about telling your professional story in a way that makes employers stop and say, “This is the person we need.” Here in Tanzania, where there is highcompetition for jobs, an attractive CV can be the difference between getting an interview call or being overlooked. Let’s walk together through to the following steps:

How to write a good CV in Tanzania

Step 1: Start with Clear Contact Information

Your CV should begin with your name, phone number, location, NIN and email.

  • Use a professional email: petermwita@gmail.com looks better than johnboy12389@gmail.com.
  • Add your location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Employers often want to know where you’re based.
  • You can also add your passport size photo on the top
  • It is important to include your national Identity Number (NIN)

Imagine the HR officer at CRDB Bank scanning through 50 CVs. If your contact details are messy or missing, they’ll move on quickly.

Step 2: Craft a Strong Career Objective

This is your chance to show ambition.

Example for a Tanzanian graduate: “Motivated Business Administration graduate from the University of Dar es Salaam, seeking to contribute to Tanzania’s growing financial sector by applying skills in customer service and digital banking.”

This sounds better than just writing: “Looking for a job.”

Step 3: Highlight Education Clearly

Start from your highest level of education to the lowest. You can put put them on a table with columns like Serial number (S/N), Level of education, institution and year of completion of that level of education. But it is not restricted to write as sentences as follows.

  • University of Dar es Salaam – Bachelor of Commerce, 2022
  • St. Joseph College, Dar es Salaam – Diploma in IT, 2019
  • Msimbazi Secondary School, Dar es Salaam – CSE, 2018
  • Buza Primary School, Dar es Salaam – Primary Education, 2014

My opinion: prefer to use table to mentioning as sentences

If you studied in Arusha or Dodoma, mention it. Local employers often connect with familiar institutions.

Step 4: Showcase Work Experience with Tanzanian Context

Private sectors need candidates with enough experience unlikely to government. Show what experience do you have on field you are applying to and other experiences that can be important on your duties.

Don’t just list job titles explain what you did and achieved.

For example:

Sales Assistant Kariakoo Market, Dar es Salaam (2021–2023)

  • Helped increase daily sales by 20% through customer engagement.
  • Managed stock records and coordinated with suppliers in Ilala.

This shows real impact in a Tanzanian environment.

Another example: Health Officer Dar es Salaam Port (2020–2022)

  • Conducted vaccination checks for international travelers.
  • Collaborated with Ministry of Health officials to improve port health standards.

You can write your experience on a table too is it’s not too long

Step 5: Add Skills Relevant to a Job you are applying

Employers want to see practical skills.

  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint (important for office jobs).
  • Languages: Kiswahili (native), English (fluent).
  • Soft Skills: Teamwork, punctuality, problem-solving.

Update your CV every time before applying so that you can add relevant skills and experience to a job you are applying. Because you may have many skills from different sectors, writing all of them does not help instead they may ruin your CV.

Step 6: Add Three Referees

Tanzanian employers require applicants to write three referees on their CV. A referee can be a supervisor of previous job, a supervisor of your field work or even your tutor. In other case you can write anybody who is close to you and can provide relevant information about you.

Step 7: Include Achievements and Certifications

This makes your CV stand out. If you have received achievements and certifications you can add them here, if you don’t have is not a case.

For example:

  • “Awarded Best Employee of the Month at Azam Group, Dar es Salaam.”
  • “Completed a short course in Digital Marketing at Tanzania Institute of Accountancy.”

Even small achievements matter. Employers want proof of excellence. Make sure they are real.

Step 8: Keep the Format Simple and Professional

Avoid fancy fonts or too many colors. Stick to black text on white background.

  • Use Times New Roman font style and font size of 12 or arial.
  • Use bullet points for clarity.
  • Keep it 2–3 pages maximum.
  • Avoid unnecessary words and repetition of words

Remember, Hunan Resources Managers may have many CV to review, they can not concentrate to read your long CV. Make your CV concise.

Example of a good CV

Name: Tango Mussa

NIN: 19900101***9010000***

Final Thoughts

A CV is a first communication between you and employer. An attractive CV is not about exaggeration it’s about presenting your real experiences in a professional way. Whether you worked in Kariakoo, volunteered in Dodoma, or studied in Arusha, put it down clearly. Employers want to see your journey, your skills, and your potential.

Think of your CV as your personal advertisement. When written well, it speaks louder than words and opens doors to interviews.

On the other day we shall walk on writing an attractive recommendation letter/job application letter.
